Understanding the business loan calculator
Business loans finance equipment, expansion, or working capital, and they amortize like consumer loans but fees loom larger. Origination fees, packaging fees, and points reduce the cash you actually receive while your payments are based on the full face amount, so the effective APR runs above the quoted rate. Comparing APRs, not headline rates, is essential when shopping lenders.
Lenders weigh business loans on cash flow, time in business, and credit, and terms vary widely from banks to online lenders to SBA programs. Beyond the rate, watch for prepayment penalties and whether payments are truly amortizing or carry a balloon at the end. A loan that improves cash flow enough to fund its own payments is sustainable; one that merely postpones a shortfall usually deepens it.
